Animal Care Assistant

The Animal Care Assistant and is responsible for working as part of the sanctuary staff in the day-to-day operations of the care and handling programs for the animals in a manner that ensures they receive consistent, high quality care. They play a key support role while implementing their duties, which aid in ensuring that the animals have their basic needs cared for, have regular exercise and enrichment, and that the facility is well maintained.

Compensation: $15 per hour.

Hours: 40 hours per week plus vacation, sick leave and holiday pay.

Location: Petaluma


On leash walks and hikes. Off leash playtime in designated, fenced in play areas. Provide enrichment activities as directed. Adhere to all schedules, and animal-handling guidelines as it applies to each individual animal. Train dogs, as needed, as instructed. Safely take dogs on small day trips to simulate real world activities, adhering to all safety guidelines and Sanctuary policies.

Provide enrichment and other activities and care for cats, rabbits, and other animals under the care of the sanctuary as directed.

Clean kennel, other animal living space, cage or cat room, as needed; refill water; replace dirty bedding with clean bedding, and maintain toys in each space.

Follow the set animal feed schedule as required.

Bathe and groom dogs as needed.

Transport dogs to and from shelters, and take dogs to adoption events when scheduled.

Administer prescribed and over the counter medicines as directed. Attend to any other medical or therapeutic needs as directed.

Comply with all methods of communications, including, but not limited to log-books, bulletin boards, emails, and animal file notes.

General clean up of designated Sanctuary working spaces, laundry, and organizing storage and working spaces. Stocking of supplies as needed.


Previous experience with shelter or rescue dogs, paid or volunteer.

Valid clean drivers license for driving in California.

Love of the outdoors and getting dirty, along with the willingness to work in all weather conditions, including cold, heat and rain.

Ability to pass a background check
