Our client is a successful family-owned $150M construction company in Marin. They're hiring a Controller to oversee all accounting activities within the firm. Reporting to the CFO and managing a staff of 5, the Controller will oversee quarter-end close, manage the annual audit, work with the CPA firm on taxes, overs business licenses, among other responsibilities. The ideal candidate has a construction background and the desire and ability to eventually transition into the CFO role-the CFO will be retiring in the next 2-3 years.

  • Manage the accounting department on a day to day basis and ensure timely and accurate completion of all accounting functions
  • Train and mentor accounting staff
  • Cross train accounting staff
  • Improve accounting systems and procedures
  • Ensure financials are GAAP compliant
  • Maintain adequate internal controls
  • Lead month end closing process
  • Lead bi-weekly staff meetings with CFO
  • Work with CPAs on annual review and income tax filings
  • Handle tax filings: sales tax, property tax, business licenses
  • Assist CFO with annual budgets
  • Work with CFO on monthly reporting package
  • Prepares financial analyses as requested by CFO
  • Collaborate with managers in other departments


  • 4-6 years' experience in an accounting leadership role
  • BA/BS degree, CPA strongly preferred
  • Experience working in construction
  • Strong leadership and strategic planning
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation communication skills; ability to communicate complex accounting concepts to non-accounting resources
  • Strong skills in building collaborative relationships across functional areas
  • Very strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Extremely organized, detail oriented professional
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage, prioritize, execute, and track multiple projects and issues
